Bridges of Hope – Called and Sent: Opening of the European Redemptorist Youth Congress 2025 in Limerick, Ireland

Today 30th of July, marks the vibrant launch of the European Redemptorist Youth Congress 2025 in Limerick, Ireland, under the inspiring theme: “Bridges of Hope: Called and Sent.” This significant gathering, running from 30th July to 3rd August, brings together over 250 young people from across Europe and beyond, including delegates from the Baltimore Province and a dynamic group from the Bronx, USA.

Hosted by the Dublin Province, this Congress is more than an event—it is a living, breathing expression of faith, culture, and community. The opening ceremony, set in the heart of Irish heritage, showcases the rich traditions of Irish music and dance, a moving drama of St. Patrick, the ethereal sounds of a harpist, the uplifting voice of a gospel singer, and a liturgy rooted in mission and unity.

Warm welcomes were extended by Superior General Rogério Gómez and the Dublin Provincial Leadership Team, setting the tone for a week of joyful encounter, deep reflection, and missionary renewal. Together, we are being reminded that we are called by God and sent forth as missionaries of hope.

Fr. Rogerio Gomes, the Superior General, welcomes the youth gathered in the Redemptorist Church, Limerick, saying, “As we gather here, united Redemptorist family, we embrace this special opportunity to be formed as a community, to connect with one another, and to deepen our understanding of our shared call. This congress, taking place during the Jubilee Year 2025, invites us to reflect on being “Pilgrims of Hope”, a journey that resonates deeply with our very identity as missionary disciples.”

Fr. Gomes further invites the youth to be vibrant missionaries of the time and highlights the Mission of the Congregation as he says, “Being a missionary is not merely about going far away, but about living with purpose, with joy, and with the courage to proclaim and to serve. It means making the Gospel visible through your own life in your family, your faith community, on social media, at school, in groups, and in friendships. Mission is being a sign of God wherever you are. It is being young like Jesus, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed (cf. Acts 10:38).”

Further, he commissioned them to be witnesses of the Redeemer through the Congress, which is the vital moment for young people, to prepare to be sent out as courageous missionary disciples for the Most Holy Redeemer, bringing the Good News to a world in need.

From reflective morning gatherings to the Limerick Camino Peace Walk, from panel discussions on reconciliation to the feast day of St. Alphonsus on August 1st, the Congress offers a rich spiritual and cultural tapestry. It’s a space where young voices lead, talents are celebrated, and faith becomes action.

As we open this congress, we pray it becomes a beacon of unity and peace—building bridges not only in Ireland but across the whole world.
