Promoting Poverty Sensitivity

Does what we hear daily in the media about “the poor” actually correspond to the facts? Are we ourselves influenced by prejudice?

The Brunnen Project Hustadt in Bochum, together with cooperation partners in the district, organized a specialist day on September 2nd dedicated to the topic of poverty sensitivity. The focus was on children’s and youth work.

Dr. Irina Volf, Director of the Institute for Social Work and Social Pedagogy (ISS) and a specialist in poverty research, gave powerful insights into the many faces of poverty, poverty across the life course, and the prerequisites for effective poverty reduction.

The 26 participants came from Bochum and other Ruhr area cities, as well as from the Redemptorist communities in Kirchhellen and Ghent (B). The exchange was particularly enriching because it brought together younger and older participants, representatives from kindergartens, schools, community work, politics, and not least from the social pastoral care of the diocese.

Sister Ulrike of the Garser Mission Sisters and the Redemptorist Father Winfried experienced on this day that, in choosing the option for the poor, we are not alone.
