Saint Alphonsus Maria de Liguori: A Life in Service to Humanity

On August 1st, we commemorate the death of Alphonsus Maria de Liguori, the founder of the Redemptorists and one of the most prominent theologians and Doctors of the Church in modern times. His legacy, deeply rooted in the Catholic Church, continues to inspire believers and clergy worldwide.

A Life for the Poor and Abandoned

Born in 1696 in Marianella near Naples, Alphonsus led a life marked by deep spirituality and tireless dedication to the poor. As a young man, he earned a doctorate in both civil and canon law and became a lawyer at the age of 16. After a disheartening experience in the courtroom, he decided to turn his back on the world and devote his life entirely to God.

Alphonsus’ mission was clear: he wanted to help those most in need—the poor, the sick, and the abandoned. He visited hospitals, cared for the incurably ill, and worked among poor goatherds. This deep commitment led to the founding of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists) in 1732, which continues to work in his spirit to this day.

The Patron Saint of Moral Theologians

Alphonsus’ theological work, particularly his writings on moral theology, made him a prominent figure in the Catholic Church. Pope Pius XII declared him the patron saint of moral theologians and confessors in 1950. Alphonsus’ approach was characterized by a deep understanding of human weakness and an unwavering hope in God’s grace. In a time dominated by strict legalism, he emphasized God’s mercy and compassion.
As stated in Romans 5:20, “Where sin increased, grace increased all the more.”

Formation of Conscience as a Central Task

A central aspect of Alphonsus’ teaching is the formation of conscience. He recognized that the conscience is the place where one most directly hears God’s call. In a world often marked by corruption, injustice, and violence, Alphonsus urges us to educate our consciences and actively oppose evil. As stated in Deuteronomy 30:19, “This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.”

The Relevance of His Message Today

Alphonsus’ teachings are more relevant today than ever. In a time when moral values are often neglected and humanity is threatened, he encourages us not to be indifferent. His call for the formation of a critical conscience and the defense of human dignity remains a powerful appeal to modern society.

A Model for the Mission

In this year dedicated to training for the mission, the Superior General of the Redemptorists, Fr. Rogério Gomes, reminds us of Alphonsus’ tireless dedication to education and mission. Alphonsus’ deep theological and spiritual knowledge helped him spread the message of the Gospel and make people aware of God’s immeasurable love.

May Saint Alphonsus Maria de Liguori continue to inspire us and help us walk the path of justice, mercy, and love. May we act in his spirit and carry the good news of the Gospel into the world.
